Why listen to me
Unlike most sales advice out there, I don’t take the easy route of spitting out knowledge and tips that worked for me and my team, without thoroughly explaining the context (the why) in which these techniques worked. This context almost-always includes a combination of analyzing the business positioning of the product & company as well as the social dynamics at play in that particular interaction.
As a result my students end up not only being armed with a powerful toolkit of effective techniques (the what) , but—more importantly—they get something much more effective in the long term; they learn how to think critically and understand from a business AND social dynamic perspective why these techniques worked in a given situation so that down the line they can effectively judge when they are in fact in a similar situation, and deploy the right technique at the right place and time, and get the desired result. This is the difference between simply telling someone “hey I did this and it worked” (the what), to saying hey I successfully did this, and here is exactly why and how it worked.
My story
When I started out in my sales career I really struggled to understand social dynamics in a business context. I never had a clue about this stuff and it hurt me financially and caused me a lot of setbacks and missed opportunities.
It was extremely frustrating because I knew I had the talent for sales, yet something was missing. Something about my behavior and perception of people was preventing me from flourishing and it took a heavy toll on my life. I am thankful I eventually found a mentor who believed in me and taught me the skills I have today.
This mentor of mine would sit with me for countless hours going over my bad calls, and explained to me in detail the social dynamics at play in my interactions and helped me clearly understand why the prospects were behaving the way they did. This knowledge opened up my eyes to a whole new reality and enabled me to become a dependable closing machine, while working less than many of my peers. The beauty of this approach is that I learned how to work smarter, not harder. As cliché as that sounds, I effectively learned how to get a lot more done in less time by using my brain power to accurately understand and read situations and leverage this knowledge to my advantage.
